There are several reasons why you might be seeing infection at the piercing site. It is still in the healing process, which can take several months, but good healing should not involve pus. You may be reacting to the metal in the ring, which should be made of surgical grade stainless steel. If yours is nickle, you may be looking at a localized reaction to that. It may also be a mild site infection because the area is not being kept dry enough, or the waistbands are irritating it. The short fix would be to expose the site to sunlight and air as often as possible and to avoid having the waistbands of anything sit right on the site. If you can't avoid this, you should cover the belly button with a large bandage to protect it from the clothing, at least until it heals completely.
The other possiblity is that you have formed a small abscess or cyst at the site and it is able to drain enough not to really have become a major problem. If that is the trouble, though, it is a problem waiting to happen. If it should ever get blocked where it can't drain, it will become red and swollen, and will need medical care to treat.
The best person to evaluate it all would be a doctor. The doctor may give you the entire lecture, but will still treat you properly if needed and should be able to help you save the piercing if it's possible. All that aside, if we assume that it's not something major, the piercing should respond to the same things any other piercing will. First of all, keep the area clean and dry. You can put on something like Neosporin or Bactitracin, but not hydrogen peroxide or alcohol. Be sure you dry it well after a bath or shower, and don't use lotions or oils in the area or soak in the tub in them. Let the site get air and sunlight whenever you can arrange it. Keep a large bandage over it when you are dressed, to prevent it being rubbed by clothing or waistbands. Wear a small ring made of surgical grade stainless steel, and try to wear a small stud if you can - especially when you have it covered with clothing, so nothing gets caught or snagged. Avoid the cheapie "jewels" as the setting is usually pot metal, although the back and stud part may be stainless steel you can still be irritated by the nickel and such in the pot metal setting. If the pus is still present after you put the ointment on for a week or so, you really ought to have a doctor have a look. While they may not approve, doctors are usually pretty realistic about things like that and will still give you the best advice to make your choice with.

the ring is a foreign body and the body is trying to rid itself of this item...the only way that you will get rid of the problem at hand is to remove the ring...sorry, but some people were just not meant to be pierced and you may be one...
it is also in an unusual area...it is constantly being irritated by the belt line and this disturbs healing...

Your piercing can take up to a year to heal. Use Bactine to clean around the area and the ring to keep infection away. I have the same problem. It will heal, it just a sensitive area.

there is a slight infection inside the ring and it may continue and even worsen. Try get hold of antibiotics and take a course of that... also try clean inside with detol or savlon (or whatever of those orange liquid dissinfectants you can get your hands on)... use hot water... and then make sure it dries out! if the piercing remains dry it may heal properly. also drink plenty of water and eat bananas... both help against infections...

Maybe you are having some kind of allergic reaction or something. I'd recommend taking it out and leaving it out. You can try again in the future if you want to. Make sure a different place does the job as well.
