saddam means a person who shocks you.
hussein in arabic means fairness, but it became more like a religious symbol because one of the muslim leaders was named hussein.

My understanding of it, and I may be wrong, is that there are two ways to pronounce his name, putting emphasis on different syllables, and Saddam Hussein can mean two different things.

The first way, in which emphasis is placed later, i.e. "Sad-DAM Hussein", is taken to mean "Destroyer" or "One who Confronts"

The second way, in which emphasis is placed early, i.e., "SAD-dam Hussein" means something like "Shoe maker" or "Cobbler"

Again, this is not verified, just what I've been told.
