When implementing any quality program in a company you will always encounter resistance from some of the work force. Many people will say "we've always done it this way." So overcoming that obstacle will be the first priority. You must find concrete examples of how "change" will benefit the company, and the employee.

Second, you will have to provide training so the workforce can understand the "quality tools." Most of these tools are based upon getting reliable, reproducible, and accurate data which which to evaluate your process or operation.

A third problem you will run into will be people turning the quality initiative into a political game. That is, they will generate fluff to satisfy management, but still keep doing things the same old way or worse, incorrectly apply the quality training and get worse results that you were originally getting. This will give them the "I told you so" excuse that they will be looking for.

And finally, any quality program must start from the top down. The leadership of the company must understand the tools. They must demand and support the application of the quality initiative, and reward success.

There are two very common quality programs currently in use today.....Six Sigma is one, and "Total Productive Maintenance" is a second one. Both are data based, processes that use statistical tools to help clear out the clutter in the data to make real improvement.

I can't stress enough how important it is for the leadership of the company to understand and support the quality effort. Lots of companies declare "quality" and fail because of a lack of understanding by the leadership.
