I have a four year old cat I adopted from a shelter. He's great, but when there are other cats around (I had a roommate with two cats for a year) he was very rough with them. I'd love to adopt another cat, but would I be putting it at risk of his overly aggressive play fighting?

I think you already know the answer to the question. Kitty is set in his ways, let him be. Most cats do great with a playmate but some more aggressive cats are only compatible with those they have known since kitten hood.

If the cat you currently have now has been your only pet for a long time, then getting another cat wouldn't be the best idea in my opinion.
If he is aggressive towards other cats then he will probably be to the new cat you bring home. If it is a kitten you choose to bring home he could kill it on accident. He might forget the strength and size difference between them both.
But it's your decision, at the end of the day you get to make the decision which YOU think is right.

I agree with most of the responses here. A kitten could be in harms way. Even if the older cat were to get used to a new kitten it would take so long; the other cat would be timid and neurotic by then. We had a little female all of about two pounds that just terrorized our two male cats. We found her home where she would be the only cat and she was happy ever after.

If you were to get another cat, your now kitty may start urinating in places you don't want him to. I had an older cat and then got a kitten for my little girl and she started urinating on the beds, on the sofa, even on my husband's head!!! She did this because she was jealous and wouldn't use a litter box that another cat used even though I had like 3 litter boxes.

I would not get another cat at this time. If it is rough play your cat may allow another cat in the yard at some point and then it would be his idea, and maybe more accepted.

I had a cat like that once and she fully tore up the new cat because she was so territorial. We had to find the new kitty a new home and had a vet bill as the result.

I have to agree with the first answer- even animals that aren't necessarily aggressive can become aggressive if you let them get accustomed to really being the only pet and then bring in an animal that they are not used to and not familiar with.

It depends what you call overly aggressive. If there was an open and direct fight, I would rather not take the change.
