I was adopted in South Dakota, where can I find info on contacting my biological parents?

I'm going to be 24 in a few days, if that helps any.

Start with your adoptive parents.
They will give your the agency. the county, city and hospital records. Most of them will have your birth mother's name on record.

The agency may even have a "letter" for you already.

There may be an issue that you can't contact them, for some serious reasons. So use caution when approaching your biological parent. The "warm fuzzy" and "hallmark" moments sometimes just don't happen- you are strangers.

I would have the support of your parents, along this journey, they will love and support you. It is primal need to see where you come from. Yet- honor the parents that raised you- they dedicated 24 years to you.

Contact the adoption agency to see if they have a letter from your biological parent(s) indicating they want to contact you. If not you can put a ltr in your file in case they contact the agency.

If you know the name of the hospital they might be able to give you the names of people who gave birth the same day as yours or they could refer you to whoever could. Actually if you know the city you were born in you could check with the local newspaper or nearest city's newspaper for birth announcements beginning with the date of your birth.

Your adoptive parents might be able to help you as well. When my sister adopted her son (before open adoptions) she was told the age of the parents, their heights, eye & hair color. She was also told that the father's father owned a sawmill & the town her son was born in. With this info, her son could easily find his father if he wanted to. Good luck in your hunt.

A very basic place to start is adoption.com.
all you have to do is type in your birthdate and look to see if any one else on that date is listed with South Dakota. Then compare notes. There are other sites on the web too, but that one seems to be most popular for both adoptees and birth parents.

I'm assuming you were born in 1983..?? I'll check there and see what I can find for you...
