I'm really nervous, and have been hearing from my friends and family that I shouldn't go because of crashes and terrorist attacks.

It is safe at the moment to fly to Birmingham i should know as i recently flew to Birmingham myself, there have been no reports of terrorist attacks for a while now. so go and enjoy yourself.

Of course its safe, also think after all these attacks it is even safer now because of all the increased security.

No less safe than usual. You could be sitting in your home and the roof could cave in and kill you so you should go out and enjoy life.
