to even think smacking could have anything to
do with animal discipline probably means you should
not have a dog. God help your dog! I'll pray for it!

no it is NOT ok to smack your dog to dicipline it. if your dog is chewing on something, tell your dog in a very firm, but not yelling voice "NO" and do a pointing hand signal. then remove the dog from whatever it was chewing on , and give it something it CAN chew on. you need to be persistant for it to work. just like with a small child. if the dog is barking, or whining, ignore it. she will relize that whining is not a way to ger your attention. dont forget that new puppies are very scared and lonely being away from thier moms, so in the first few nights when the puppy is whining, you should go tend to him/her and calm her, hug her, hold her, and when she falls asleep , place her back in her bed. puppies stools tend to not be solid when thier changing to adult food, so you may have to clean up in the middle of the night for a few days. positive reinforcement is much better then negative.
if you have any other questions, i will be sure to answer! so please ask!

Tell her no in a firm voice. I have never agreed with smacking a dog. I have seen people literally beat their dog with the impression of them doing so it will make the dog behave. Dogs are not human; they do not have a clue why they are being smacked or beaten. This type of discipline could very well backfire and make the dog afraid of human contact- a scared dog will bite the living daylights out of you.

Smacking your dog is just going to make it nervous and it will end up doing more damage then before. Just pat him/her on the nose. Don't flick like some people think. They hate that and it will let me know that they did something wrong.

No. she is a baby and has no idea these things she does are objectionable to humans. Reward her for the things you like, ignore the things you don't. If you can't ignore it, teach her to do something incompatible.
For instance, if mouthing you is unacceptable, teach her to touch the palm of your hand with her nose. Redirect her to that action when she starts to get mouthy.

Laying your puppy on her back teaches her not to trust you. Smacking her with a newspaper will have far reaching consequences with fear as she grows up. Yes, you can stop her negative behavior, but she will learn you aren't to be trusted.
And rolling her on her back is nonsense, it comes originally from a faulty study of a bunch of wolves thrown together in captivity. It was assumed the "Alpha" wolf rolled the subordinate wolves over to show dominance. Some birdbrain came up with the idea of doing that to dogs to "show them who's boss".
First problem: later studies showed alphas don't roll suborinates, the subordinate lowers themselves to show no challenge.
Second problem: dogs have about 10,000 of selective breeding to remove them from wolves. They aren't wolves.
Third problem: Later studies of domestic dogs have shows that the use of force to assert leadership actually causes loss of respect. Only bullies have to use force to maintain power. True leaders don't have to force anyone to follow, compare and contrast: Hitler with Nelson Mandela. Which is the bully and which is the leader?

A dog can understand an upset owner even easier than a child can.
Simply put on a stern voice and possibly put a "martingale" collar on your dog.
I am anxious to know what kind of behavior you are having a problem with...chewing, potty training?

If you use a dog training device it would be common sense to first look up how to use it before using it. Such devices get a bad reputation by people using it, without knowing how to use it.
If you give a dog a shock, the dog doesn't know what to do. If I go up to you and slap you, you wouldn't know why either and except for the likely impulse to slap me back you would have no idea why I slap you and what I expected you to do so I won't slap you again.
Your dog doesn't even know where the slap came from and what he is supposed to do. Before you use an electric collar on a dog you need to figure out the lowest setting the dog can notice. You start at zero and slowly set it higher until you see a reaction from your dog. What you are looking for is a twitch of an ear, or a startled look. Really, you don't want to hurt your dog, you want to get your dog's attention.
Once you established what level works for your dog, you need to condition your dog. If you want to use a collar for improving your dog's recall, your dog needs to already know what it is supposed to do when you call "come" (or whatever command you use). Now with a collar on, you call your dog, you can give your dog a short shock, but if your dog comes you stop immediately. You want that your dog learn he is in control. If he comes, he won't get a shock. Read up on "how to condition a dog to a electric collar" and don't use the collar again until you understood it.
I have an electric collar for my dog, but I paid a little more than $200 for it, it is rechargeable and I am happy with it. I've read through a whole bunch of reviews for the cheaper collars and they seem to not last very long, though you can get lucky. But I figured I rather spend more one time than a little often.
My dog is also very happy with the electric collar, because if I pull the collar out, he knows he is doing something more fun than a walk on a leash and he loves running off leash.

If the puppy isn't being obediant, talk to him in a firm voice (not loud) but firm. Look him in the eye and be sure he understands what you are telling him to do. Try not to hit him, but if he is being stubborn, you may use a rolled up news paper. Don't whack him hard, just let him know that you are serious. It's always best not to discipline in this way though, so try getting him to respond to the tone of your voice first. Good Luck!
