He can only be caught while downloading the illegal software. Many software companies hire people to scan the p2p networks for illegal downloaders. If your friend is caught by one of these scanners, his Internet Service Provider will be contacted and your friend may get a warning email notice. If he keeps doing it, he may have his internet shut down or worse, be sued and have to pay for what he downloaded.
The good news is that after your friend has finished downloading all the software, he is pretty much safe unless the FBI comes to his house and searches his hard drives, or if someone hacks into his computer and sees the contents of his hard drive. That's what a firewall is for though.
Good luck and be careful.

there are a approach of techniques you will get stuck and pay very heavy fines besides as do penitentiary time. if you're wanting to apply it for aspect artwork, it truly is, to do a settlement pastime, if the organization you're doing the artwork for famous out you're utilizing unlawful copies of software, they could (a million) record you (2) sue you and (3) refuse to pay you for the artwork. Why? because in the journey that they have got ANY understanding of this, they is also sued by the owner/author of the software. In different words, do not try this. "I really favor to position in it on one computer…" does not make it a lot less unlawful, you're nevertheless stealing the software. the information others are telling you about getting into worry on condition that you promote/distribute the software is inaccurate, all that takes position there is that in case you've been to finish that, the consequences are worse.

One of the most common ways of people getting caught using soft ware that they did not buy or is being used by another user is when they use the help section for that program. By using the help section in that program, that is being traced by the company. If the company sees that it was registered by another user, then that is when they will find out. So as long as your friend is not using the help section of the program, he should be alright!!
