Well, there are some people with a disease that prevents them from sleeping, so really, a lifetime. But those without the disease, I've heard of marines going 20 days without sleep and having to stand alert on post, so about that then. I personally have gone for 13 days with no more than a total of 30 minutes of sleep altogether, but there was a biological reason for it I was producing too much norepinephrine and it prevented me from sleeping. It was the worst experience in my life. Imagine going day to day with one day blending into the next and having to work and keep your sanity and personal and family life and try to keep it together mentally. I almost had a breakdown and wouldn't wish it on anyone. I guess it's different if you know you can lie down and actually GO to sleep; I just wasn't able to do that physically.

The current world record for the longest period without sleep is 11 days, set by Randy Gardner in 1965. Four days into the research, he began hallucinating. This was followed by a delusion where he thought he was a famous footballer. Surprisingly, Randy was actually functioning quite well at the end of his research and he could still beat the scientist at pinball.

264 hours.

I wouldn't reccomend it. . .The human body needs a certain amount of sleep for the brain to function properly. The man that holds the current record was hallucinating and had thoughts of grandeur after only a few days.

Some scientists claim that brain damage starts to occur after about 72 hours without sleep. I don't know if thats true, but I do know that the navy seal trainees are driven for up to 72 hours and no longer.

I stayed up for 60 h (handing in my thesis, packing up my apartment and traveling to another continent). I then slept for 18 h and wet my bed! So, my advice is to wear a diaper!
