I think that you are getting the information too many steps from the source. To make the best decisions in life you will need to have honest and reliable information.
If this is true then your best friend already knew that you had some interest in the guy and that fact should have gotten to him by now. If he is interested in you then you will be contacted.
The best thing you can do now is make sure your best friend knows how you feel. If you see your crush before he asks you out and he does not ask you, then you should tell him that you heard a rumor that he wanted to. Ask him if the rumor is true. Even if he is very shy, he should be able to say Yes if it is true.

If the person u like is dating your best friend seriously consider which is more important to u - a relationship that may go nowhere and only last a short time OR keeping ur best friend. because ur friend is not going to want to speak to u ever again if u breakup their relationship and in my experience friendships are amongst the most important things in life.
