I absolutely agree with those who say this doesn't belong in school. This is the parents job. Yes, job. I think we as a society are all too spoiled by public education. Send them off and let someone else teach them while I succeed in my career. Oh, and then I'll be totally shocked when they no longer recognize me as their superior in wisdom when they become teens. Big shock!
What do I tell my home-schooled children? I tell them it depends. First there are the necessary things like food and shelter. There is no finding any higher purpose if you're chained to a job desperately trying to keep the bills paid. Each person has unique skills and some take a lifetime to develop, so for those who have some clue, get 'em started (also the parents job, not yours). For the rest, teach the basics and let the skills show themselves.

Wow that is deep for a 9 year old. I think at that age the purpose in life is to be well rounded..make friends, help out your family, find a hobby or two, and do well in school.

This whole concept is too deep for them. If you have to have a purpose when you're 10 years old, I pity you for how you'll feel when you're 30. Take my advice: Drop this whole subject and let those 10-year-olds be 10. Life is too short to start worrying about this obscure stuff in the fourth grade.
**EDIT** Well, if you're teaching in a Catholic school, you already know the answers. When I was in Catholic school, we were informed our "purpose" in life was only to serve God, hate this life, and wait to go to heaven and spend ETERNITY serving God. Since this is what you'll be told to tell your kids anyway, why are you bothering to ask us?

The purpose of life is to follow the path of your heart. Every soul has infinite intrinsic value and one must have compassion for others and yourself on your journey. There are many adversaries that try to lead you astray and put obstacles on your path. As long as you stay on your path, your purpose in life will be fulfilled whether you die on your first step, at the end of your path or somewhere in-between.

Our purpose in life such as it is is to have children and ensure the survival of our genes. Other than that it is whatever you feel happy doing with the emphasis on helping others to be happy, there is no purpose in the universe, nature does not care about you as an individual.
I am sure the religious will come up with other answers.

He descended into hell: the third day He arose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
