Valium can be used for several different things. In your case it would be for short term relief of anxiety and or stress. Also if you are having back pain it can be used for that. Are you having muscle spasms in your back also? Valium can help with that. You shouldn't stay on Valium for too long because it can become addicting and it isn't good for you to be on it (it's almost like a narcotic.) Prozac is better as far as stress and safer on your insides (liver, kidneys, etc.) I hope your back gets better and your stress goes away.

~The Valium can only be used temporarily. Why are you refusing to take prozac? Your doctor knows what he's doing, that's why you call him "doctor."
Since you can't stay on the Valium long, expect him to prescribe something to take the Valiums place, but it may have the possibility of having more side effects than the Prozac. The Valium will cause you to be tired and Prozac doesn't.
My advise, TAKE THE PROZAC!
Good luck~
Of course his doctor thinks he has a phyciatric problem, he's refusing to take medication.

There are some good technical answer to what valium is and what it does, but I wanted to answer an underlaying question/observation. You doctor does not believe that you have real pain. What you have said means that your doctor thinks you have a psychiatric condition that needs treating. Just thought that you should be aware of that if it is something you did not already know.

Sounds like your doctor is a junkie. I will not take Valium. Get to the root of the problem by finding out what is causing your back pain, posture, mattresses, not drinking enough water, etc... and change your doctor right away. Motrin is a muscle relaxer but use it carefully and only for a short time (if back pain is unbearable).

Diazepam (IPA: [daɪˈæzɪpæm]), marketed under brand names Valium, Stesolid, Diazemuls, Seduxen, Bosaurin, Diapam, Antenex and Apozepam)[1] is a drug which is a benzodiazepine derivative. It possesses anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, sedative, skeletal muscle relaxant and amnestic properties. This makes it a useful drug for treating anxiety, insomnia, seizures, alcohol withdrawal, and muscle spasms. It is also used before certain medical procedures (such as endoscopies) to reduce tension and anxiety, and in some surgical procedures to induce amnesia

Valium will help relax you so the pain meds you take can work more effectively. I have a friend who takes it to help with muscle spasms in her back. You do need to give it a try and see how it works for you. The doc is trying to help you but you seem to be fighting him all the way tooth and nail.

Diazepam is used to treat anxiety, acute alcohol withdrawal, and seizures. It is also used to relieve muscle spasms and to provide sedation before medical procedures. This medication belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines which act on the brain and nerves (central nervous system) to produce a calming effect. It works by enhancing the effects of a certain natural chemical in the body (GABA).
OTHER USES: This medication may also be used to prevent extremely bad nightmares (night terrors).
