Even if the two of you know a lot of things about each other, a telephone is one place when you can learn more. To avoid those super boring calls, take a notebook and write down a bunch of questions that you want to ask him (write your own answers after the questions, just in case). If the conversation goes dull (snore pie with yawn sauce as Red Fraggle would say) then get out your little book.
You don't need to just be abrupt, but you can lead into each question with something like "I've always wondered about..." or "I don't remember that you ever told me..."
Do you sing, can you swim, can you jump on one foot, can you wiggle your ears, can you roll your tongue, shave with one hand, can you pat your head while rubbing your belly and then rub your head and pat your belly...
Favorites (colors, food, places to eat, kind of movies, books, songs, etc.) Also "What if.."" You could live anywhere, where would that be? You could be invisible, what would you do? You could fly, where would you go?
Best time of your life, the worse time, ideal job, car, music system, whatever.
Relationships are built by communication. You do not have to be good at it over the phone, but a little practice might help. If you can get him to laugh, so much the better. Do not be afraid to be silly.
