The first thing you can do is to wash the person's face with a wet wash cloth. Don't use ice cold water, just regular room temperature. Ice cold water will be too much of a shock to their system. That will help to cool the surface skin temperature.

Next, you can make an ice pack by wrapping the ice cube in a wash cloth and put it inside a plastic sandwich bag. Never put the ice directly on the skin.

You can also have the person lie down in a bath tub full of room temperature cool water.

It all depends on how high the temperature is. If it's just a little high, like, say 101, these measures will help until you can go see the doctor.

But if it's high, like 104, then that's an emergency situation, and you need fever-reducing drugs right away. A person can suffer serious and permanent brain damage if a high fever persists too long.

Hello =)

There is an old flowering herb, called "feverfew" that you brew into a bitter tea. It would be helpful to have one of these plants in your garden. They are a perennial. It is relatively effective. You can dry the flowers and leaves, much like you do chamomile.

Note, though, that once a fever hits 101, it is advisable that you stop any alternative methods, and begin rotating tylenol, aspirin, and ibuprofen every 2 hours, to keep fever down.

"Sweating out" a fever is never advisable. Ice packs to the head are helpful in keeping brain temps down. If a fever hits 102 in an adult, or 104 in a child (under 6) it is time for a trip to the Hospital.

If you cannot get to a hospital, call the ER for instructions about Cold baths, etc....

Namaste, and Happy New Year,

--Tom

I would follow a lot of the advice in here except for one. DO NOT GIVE ASPIRIN!!! It can cause a form of brain damage or retardation. I forget what the actual name is called, but the bottom line is NO ASPIRIN!!!, Even in adults. Just start off with a warm glass of tea, a cool, not cold, wash cloth and a very warm blanket. Make sure you do drink PLENTY of fluids. The higher a fever, the faster your body can dehydrate. And I do agree, if an adult's fever goes over 102 or a child's fever goes over 104, go directly to the ER. Never take chances. It is ALWAYS better to be over cautious than to be under cautious.

Let the fever do its thing. As long as it doesn't get too high (+103 degrees) its battling the illness. To relieve some symptoms, just make the person comfortable, and if there's a breathing problem give them medicine for the sinus without a fever reducer. If they don't get better in a day or so, contact a doctor.

Fever is the body's way of burning out bugs. Keep the person hydrated with plenty of fluids and keep them warm. If they have trouble sleeping is the only reason I give tylenol or something to bring the fever down.

Peace!

Rest, keep warm, drink plenty of fluids (Gatorade, Pedialyte) to prevent dehydration. Fever is the body's way of fighting infection. You don't say what's causing the fever, but if it is caused by a serious infection, then it may take antibiotics to cure the infection. In the line of homeopathy, Echinacea is a good anti-viral/anti-biotic and may be beneficial.

My infant son just had a very high fever, and I laid cold wash cloths on him. Sometimes a luke warm bath will help. Drink liquids to replenish the fluids lost.

food food and more food. get as much food in them as possible. soak bread in soup and feed them that if nothing else. lots of beverages help too -- juice heavy in vitamin c is best. orange juice might be too acidic. if that doesn't work try something like fortified grape juice.

medicines for fevers aren't really medicines -- they just make the symptoms less severe -- they don't cure.

a tepid, not cold, bath.

putting someone with a high fever into a cold bath could cause seizure.

i'm a big supporter of taking showers/baths when you are sick. you clean all those germs off your skin so you will get well faster.
