I don´t die for living in USA. But, many, many people is killed for American people and his leaderships. Don´t forget Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Don´t forget the "Plan Condor" in Latin America, Don´t forget the murder the thousands and thousands innocent people of Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq... Don´t forget that you won the first and the second World War, and the Cold War, and you invented the Neoliberalism, so: "America" is the first responsible for the political disasters of the wholly world.
They call themselves "Americans" because they think they are the only one, the rest of America doesn´t exist for them.

That's a really good question!

Everyone's been saying that since we're called "The United States of AMERICA" that we're "AMERICAN". However they don't realize that OTHER countries in OTHER languages call us "United States-an" and not "America-an". I know it sounds crazy in English, but that's because we don't have an equivalent word in our language!

And you're right! People in Argentina and Brazil are just as American as a Spaniard is European or a Nigerian is African. Other places recognize themselves by country, and we recognize ourselves by continent. A lot of people just don't want to look at it that way because being an American is such a United States patriotic thing that if a Brazilian came and said they were American, they'd be laughed at. But they are; they're South American, and we're North American. We're from "the Americas", not just one America.

I honestly can't answer your question, but I wish we'd introduce "estadounidense" into English to clear things up! lol.

The name was established while the rest of the continents consisted of "New France," "New Spain," "New Granada," "Brazil," and various Russian entities. People in these colonies still considered themselves part of their mother nations and as citizens of those nations. Those in the British colonies referred to themselves as Americans to establish their own identity while still owing alleigiance to the king.

By the time Canada, Mexico, and all of the other nations gained their own governments and national identities, "Americans" were uniquely those of the United States.

Do you call the people of the United States of Mexico Americans or Mexicans?
So if it works for Mexico why should it be the same for the USA?

The citizens of the United States of America are Americans and that of the United States of Mexico are Mexicans.
Well, It makes sense to me.

Note : I am neither American nor Mexican but European. Meaning that my country is part of the European Union (EU). Even though all the people leaving in Europe are European, we (people from the EU) tend to think that just the people of the EU states are to be called and seen as Europeans... See the story repeats itself over and over wherever you are

Absolutely right. But yanks have stolen the name "Americans" for themselves, and themselves alone. They classify people from other countries according to the name of the country they are from, but they took the name of the whole continent only for they. To make things more interesting, they take offense when somebody asks them why, and also, people from other countries follow and fuel the idea of calling them "Americans"

Our nation is called the United States of America. Therefore a member of one of these states would be part of America, making them American. A Columbian is technically an American, but ithey are normally called Columbian. There's nothing else you can really call Americans. :-/

I agree with you, but someone from Mexico would rather be called a mexican than an american. same as the other North, Central, and South Americans. Also, I don't think it is a name we gave ourselves, but a name that immigrants to this nation came to call it collectively. Don't be angry... This is the most free nation on the planet, people die to get here. They don't die trying to leave

don't forget Canada. well if i had to speculate i would say because the north, central, and south are all connected. it is a designation for the continent itself, i think, like Africa the whole continent is called africa, but there are many countries within it. Egypt, Kenya, Nigiria, etc. but that is only my opinion.

Because "citizens of the United States of America" is too long to say.
