Looks like your DVD player is busted, but if it is a home-theater in a box, you can still use the Receiver part.

Buy a cheap DVD player (with component output) and connect the digital audio out of the DVD player to the digital in of the Receiver. Make sure the DVD player has both optical and coax output or at least it matches the input of your existing AV receiver (most probably coax). The whole setup will cost you less than $75 and you will probably get a better DVD player as well.

It's built in to WHAT ? Most stand alone disc players are very good to excellent, it's the players in cheap all in one HT systems that are gawd awful and crappy. Whatever is wrong with your player, buying a stand alone player for $60, or moving up to a stand alone BluRay player for $100 will get you a better and newer player, for no more money than a repair would cost of the older machine.

Maybe the discs are dirty or you need to clean your dvd player. Make sure your discs are dirt, dust, and finger print free and use a lens cleaning kit to clean the player. Have you checked to see you have everything plugged in correctly and you're putting in discs correctly?

the laser could be out of line
it probably is not worth fixing it (CD and DVD players are normally cheaper to buy than to fix)
how do you know that it is going to be $75 to fix? is that only the the minimum charge to let you know what is wrong and how much it really is to get fixed?
