She is a boxer bull dog mix. She can be really sweet and I have been working on house training her and tricks like sit. I cant get her to calm down though. She is REALLY hyper a lot.

She gos crazy and jumps all over you and it hurts because her nails are long and i cant get her to calm down long enough to clip them with the special clippers i bought.

Does anyone know how i can get her to calm down?

I recently went through something similar. My dog will be 6 months old in a week. He's a German Shepherd and VERY hyper. We learned to try and tire him out. If you keep her active, she'll tire out and won't be so hyper. She may be bored. Set time aside each day to train him a new trick and for play. As you know puppies are a lot of responsibility and time consuming. After she gets older you won't have to feel obligated to do this so much. Aso, try to cut her nails when he's sleepy. Make sure to reward her after cutting them and talk to her while doing it, letting her know what a good girl she is.

You need to play with her for at least 30 mintues and get some of that baby energy out of her before you start any type of training because she wont be able to focus. you need to shove her down and say no! firmly to her when she jumps and givbe her a pop on the nose. try clipping her nails when she is sleeping or having the vet do it when she gets her puppy shots. after an hour of playing she should be tuckered enough to let you cut a few. reward her for calm behavior when you cut her nails. but a boxer HAS to be played with like an hour a day or they will do distructive beahviors liek chewing or digging. good luck

We have a 6 month old Sheltie. We watched the "Dog Whisperer" and took an idea from him. When Belle starts barking and acting up when I have piano students I I give her either the command or hand signal for "down". Then I come over and forcibly (without hurting her) hold her down for a second and say "calm". This way she senses that I'm the alpha member of her pack (having to lay down in submission) the word "calm" just gives her a command. After doing this Belle usually goes under my chair and lies there for an hour while I give piano lessons.

Young pups never calm down, it's something you're just going to have to get used to. You probably crate train her I presume? I have a dog (9 months) and I have the same issue.. she's just much smaller, but it's still terribly impossible to cut her nails. You need two people to do it. If all fails take her to your local Petsmart, or pet grooming place whichever you prefer.. and they'll do it for you!

When my pup can't calm down, I ignore her. If she's jumping up on you don't pet her, you can firmly say no, tell her to sit, wait for her to do it.. hold her butt down and pet. Teach her she has to be calm to get your attention. It's a very frustrating process but it'll work eventually! Never ever get her excited when you come home from wherever. It may be fun to have a dog jumping all over you at your return.. but it encourages the hyper behavior. You're her master, not her littermate.. always remember that.. it's impossible to be both. A dog just can't respect someone who acts as they do.

This may sound like no duh but PLAY WITH HER! puppies are soaring with energy. the best way to bond, train and get out her energy is by running in park, with toy, next to while you bike, whatever.
While playing you can insert commands and get her to learn all the rules.
