I just got a new hamster, and I think my dog is jealous?
I recently got a new hamster, and ever since my dog has been acting strange when I'm in the room that has the hamster cage in it. When I go to feed the hamster or see it, he will follow me up and if I shut him out he will scratch on the door with his paws. This morning I woke up, and he (my dog) was at my bedroom door because he wanted to come in. When my dog is near the hamster cage, he will just sit and stare at it.

I'm really worried that my dog could try to get into the room with the hamster cage, and attack it when I'm not in the house. He is a Golden Retriever, has never bitten, and is very good, so this is unusual.

Is he jealous, sad (thinking I've found a new friend) or maybe he is just interested in this furry little creature that he's never seen before?

aaaaw...cute. Sad too. Dogs are so emotional sometimes. Give puppy extra snuggles and share your new pet with him. Let him sniff up close and examine the little guy. He' probably curious but mostly jealous.

he's probably jealous. It's like having a small kid that you love and cherish and pamper. then a baby comes into the family and that kid will be a littls hurt. make sure to spend lots of time with your dog. take it on a long walk to the park, give it a few extra treats, snuggle or pet it alot and your dog will see that the hamster is just a new edition and will come to love it. he also might be aa little curious to see this strange furry little thing that you adore so very much. also, when you play with the hamster, let the dog in to show it they can be friends. let him sniff it but keep a close eye out for the hamster.

Awe. I have a cat named Gus. The moment i got my mice he was fishing for attention, he would do things he had never done before it was cute but i could tell he was worried he wasn't the baby anymore. animals are quite similar to kids. they are used to the constant attention and the moment it is taken from them they tend to get nervous. Try and take some time out for your little pooch.Walk him play with him in a different room or away from the hamster. Also he just might not know what to think of the hamster. you should definitely put the cage up high out of your dogs reach. Let me know if you have any more questions or how things work out i would love to know :]

I think the reason why he seems to be jealous is probably because he's lacking in attention from you. There is nothing wrong with this, a new pet is quite exciting and you might, without knowing, pay more attention to your hamster than your dog.

I can't imagine a dog attacking a hamster unless it was a viscous one.

THIS IS SERIOUS.

Show your dog more affection and love. Play with your doggy more often. Also, you can let your dog "interact" with your hamster by letting your dog sniff your hamster (but make sure the latter is clean). If the jealousy thing continues, you got to give away your hamster, sadly.

Your dog may just become so depressed that he/she refuses to eat and die. This is true. Please act quickly.

Even though your dog is domestic, he is descended from the wolf. Now you are placing a rodent in front of him. Think of dogs and cats, now replace that cat with your hamster.

He is very interested, but he really is not ready to play with a hamster. Keep them apart.

Remember curiosity killed the cat, I dont think you want it to happen to your hamster.

i think he is just wondering what it is. i mean a furry small ball running around. maybe he feels you are loving it up more? i don't know...just hang out with your pup and devote some time to him too. also maybe let him sniff the dude out and maybe he will grow accustomed to the new member of the fam! good luck!

try to include him when you are doing hampster things. show him it's not a bad thing. when i go to feed my chincilla, (rabit/hampster thing) i always have my dog walk me to the food cabnit and back. i'd recomend keeping dog treats near the hampste food. just make sure you have time for both pets.

Do NOT let them play together. All too often, people miss the warning signs of "I'm gonna get you sucka!"
