This is not an uncommon problem. It probably means that your dog has full or infected anal glands. These glands help dogs to mark their territory through scent. They usually empty themselves every time a dog defecates. They can become clogged, however, and unable to empty, and sometimes infection can develop. When this happens, your dog feels a constant, itchy pressure. It can be very uncomfortable.
To get your dog relief, make an appointment with your veterinarian. She can empty (or "express") the glands, a messy and extremely smelly job, but one that will make your pooch feel much better. If the glands are infected, she can clean them and prescribe an antibiotic. If your dog has a chronic, recurring problem with infected anal glands, they can be surgically removed. For more information, talk to your veterinarian.

Clogged anal gland ducts. The anal "scent" glands fill up with stuff and get itchy, when the drainage ducts get irritated or clogged up. The cause is, as far as I know, thought to be either allergies or diet, if it isn't just the dog's anatomy. You may see that the dog leaves a stinking streak and then stops scooting, because it has emptied the clogged gland. Otherwise, a vet or groomer can drain the glands for you manually, or if you've got a strong stomach and a pair of gloves you can do it yourself when you bathe the dog. Ask how.
It can also be tapeworms. Look for little white wormy things, or for "sesame seeds" clinging in his coat near the anus.

Contrary to popular belief, butt scooching is actually a sign of anal glands needing to be expressed. Rarely does it mean worms. This is only if the scooching is consistant. If it's just once in awhile, it's rear probably itches. You can always take your dog to the vet or any groomer and ask them to express the anal glands for you, it's a nasty smelly job! I would try that before jumping to the conclusion of worms. If he has worms, you'll see them in his feces and rectum plus his stomach will be bloated and his eating will have changed to either eating less or eating way more depending on the type of worm. Good luck!

If you have wormed your dog. It could be the scent gland in his butt, which there is pretty much nothing you about. Our cat has that problem and the vet said unless he is having trouble going to the toilet there is nothing they can do for him. If you are using supermarket or petshop brought worming meds, it might pay to worm with stuff from the vet very once n while.

each now and then they do it simply by fact it nevertheless has fecal cloth which motives it to itch (no longer all dogs can attain to wash it, like dachshunds). different situations, that's an aggravated anal sac (which could empty with each bowel pass yet would not consistently, subsequently the inflammation) or worms. With our dachshunds, we could desire to often sparkling their bottoms with a damp towelette provided that they are able to't do it themselves and this looks to look after the difficulty for us. besides the undeniable fact that, that's advisable to ask your vet and in all probability get a try for worms and/or have the anal sac checked just to make certain.

Contrary to popular belief this is NOT a sign of worms. This usually means that the anal glands/sacs are full. Some dogs' glands are expressed on their own and some need to be manually expressed every so often. Take your dog to the vet and he/she will take care of it.

my guess is that he has worms. take him to the vet who will either give the dog a pill to take or drops that you put on between the dogs shoulders.
To prevent the dog from getting worms ..animal should be treated every few months. Also treating for fleas at the same time helps .. There are all kinds of different treatments on the market .. so if in doubt take pooch to your own vet ..
hope all goes well ...

My vet says that it means the dog's bottom itches. He can't reach back there to scratch, so he drags his little bottom along the ground.
I prefer this to the old wives' tale of worms. (My dachshund does it and is worm free, also, there are no fleas where I live, if the altitude weren't so high, the cold would kill them. LOL)

I usually do the same thing after eating a Super Burrito from Taco Bell. In reality, your dog has a plugged anal gland. You can unplug it yourself (like squeezing a zit) or take it to a vet and have them do it.

I have dogs before and I noticed the same things too. But usually when they do it, it's after they poop. I thought what a smart dog, they know how to wipe their bum after they've done their stuff. Try and observe really close, your dog may be one of the smart ones. A descendant from my dogs.
