The best freeware program out there is The GIMP- which is a fully featured, open-source program.
It has a fantastic users forum who can help you with nay questions you have.
It is favoured by many photo enthusiasts as it is not too far off being as good as Photoshop CS2.

for Windows - http://gimp.org/windows/

You could try downloading a trial version of Photoshop- the very best editor- if you're not a heavy user (has a 15 day expiry)

(navigate down to Photoshop)

The Gimp is supposed to be a very versatile photoediting program, but it is not easy to use.

I suggest instead, maybe get a freebie on a computer magazine NOT a trial program.

Many programs are fairly good: Paintshop Pro, Photoshop Elements.

Incidentally, Photoshop Elements version 4.0 is not cheap, AND it will not install on Windows 98, or Windows 2000. It needs Windows XP or something similar.

Forget this freeware stuff my friend. For maybe seventy bucks you can own Photoshop elements. Then you select the parts of the image you want to convert to black and white, and simply desaturate them.

Freeware is all very appealing, but really, if you enjoy image manipulation, spring for the seventy bucks. It'll show you are really interested, and provide you with the best tool out there.

This is just a suggestion!!! If you can't find anything that works for you you can email me and I can try to help you out. I'm getting a portfolio together of photo edits and I'm looking for people who are willing to let me use their pictures if I edit them for them. If you want to look at some of the things I've done you can go to http://photoenhance.photosite.com or email photoenhance@yahoo.com ,again this is just a suggestion if you hit a dead end

I recommand you to use Google Picasa to manage and edit your pictures.

Picasa is software that helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. Every time you open Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures (even ones you forgot you had) and sorts them into visual albums organized by date with folder names you will recognize. You can drag and drop to arrange your albums and make labels to create new groups. Picasa makes sure your pictures are always organized.

Picasa also makes advanced editing simple by putting one-click fixes and powerful effects at your fingertips. And Picasa makes it a snap to share your pictures ¨C you can email, print photos at home, make gift CDs, instantly share via Hello™, and even post pictures on your own blog.

free download in here, just have a try:
