well it's all what you say but a main influencing factor is the environment. Mud houses are quite suitable for the hot arid environment. It's thermally comfort and blocks out a lot of heat. Plus in Africa having windows is like suicide because the heat would cook the house inside. mud is the most suitable because of cost but also to the environment.

Mud is free, it is easy to shape into bricks,it dries hard,it keeps the elements out and it just does not rain often in Africa.
