Pain on urination doesn't = UTI. It could be many other things. Go ahead and drink as much water as you want. It won't hurt you.

answer question 1 : In the early stages of UTI drinking plenty of water or cranberry juice can help at a certain point but you still would need to go to a doctor. It just depends on how severe your UTI is because you don't want to prolong the infection due to the bacteria can travel to your kidneys then it will be a new problem.

answer question 2 : There is nothing you can do at home to help the UTI due to the extent you had it for a week but go to a doctor or see your local assistance clinics in your area.

drinking a lot of water alone may control but unfortunately will NOT cure the infection, because E. Coli bacteria, which cause over 85% of uti's, attach themselves to the bladder wall with hooks and cannot be washed away. you will probably notice that drinking a lot will make your urine clear up, but when you stop drinking for a while like when you are sleeping at night your urine will cloud right back up again. these buggers double their population every twenty minutes.

cranberry juice cocktails are worthless and actually may make the problem worse, because of the added sugar and very small amounts of cranberry in them. pyridium will only treat the burning and pain on urination, it does not kill the bacteria.

there is a simple sugar called d-mannose which you can buy online or at a health food store. this stuff works on e. coli because virtually all of it is excreted in the urine, and e.coli germs really like it so they attach to the sugar molecules instead of your bladder wall and get washed out when you urinate. it's pricey, but hell of a lot cheaper than an ER visit, which you will DEFINITELY want to avoid if you are uninsured because they will soak you for at least $1000.

you can try cranberry tablets, the sugar mentioned above, vitamin c, raw garlic, and anything else you can think of to throw at this thing, but keep in mind that if you start getting pain in your flanks or lower back right alongside the spinal cord that means that the infection is now spreading to your kidneys and you have to make a tough decision as to whether to keep trying to self-treat the condition or go see a doctor. antibiotics also have a lot of scary side-effects, so keep that in mind and if you do get a prescription, go online right away and find out what the side effects are and watch carefully for them.

if push comes to shove, go to a walk-in urgent care clinic instead of a hospital emergency room, it might save you quite a bit of money

good luck

I've had mutiple UTI's. I know they SUCK.
If you drink LOTS of water it will dilute the acid in your urine making it more bearable to pee.
Go to the ER and they will give you an antibiotic shot until you can get a prescription. Also the medicine they usually give is like 13 bucks

at the first this helps, when you first feel the onset of symptoms...but when an infection progresses, there is no way to stop it unless you take an antibiotic.

in it's initial stages, cranberry pills (you can find these in a drugstore amongst the vitamins) help...as well as a lot of cranberry juice.

why don't you go to a health center, somewhere that you wouldn't have to pay?

A UTI can become VERY serious...affecting vital organs such as your kidneys.

Of course, it is a must to consult the doctor asap. Meantime, drinking plenty of water and soft drinks can help to a certain extent as also the higher intake of substances that lead to increased passage of urine like beer, coffee, and tea.

Drink cranberry juice.....also the pharmacy sells pills over the counter to help with the pain and frequency in urination. Stay away from caffeine.

If you don't get a UTI treated it can go to the blood stream or your kidneys causing sepsis and land you in the hospital. You cannot treat a true UTI at home. Better to get it checked out now than to risk kidney infection or a blood stream infection and needing to be hospitalized.
