We live in the boonies. No house for a mile. My dog was recently attacked either by other dogs or coyotes. I have now put a collar on him and a leash. The problem is he won't go outside at all now. Everytime he goes to the door, I get the leash out and he runs and hides under the bed. I know he eventually will have to go outside to use the bathroom. My question is how do I get him to like his leash? I don't want to traumatize him because he has been through enough with the attacks I'm sure. The cuts are starting to heal so I don't want to let him loose to be attacked again. I can't afford to have him nutuered until Februray. Any suggestions?

Make it a pleasant experience that he will associate with the leash. Going for a long walk with you, preferably without the coyotes. Or taking a ride in the car and going somewhere. Eventually he will get used to it and perhaps even like it. You may try instant gratification of giving him treats along with attaching the leash so that he associates the two..LEASH = TREATS = GOOD, and then slowly eliminate the treats.

Well, I have a stubborn dog who also hated his leash. The way I got him to like it was first put the collar on him for a few days or until he is used to it. Then, put the leash on the collar but don't try to walk the dog. Just let him wear the leash for a few days. By then he should feel comfortable enough to use it. He might be rejecting te leash because he might think that it is something else that's gonna attack him. Just take it slow and have patience.

My Border Collie just went through the same exact thing 3 months ago. The fix is easy.

First walks, shorten the leash....purposely hold the leash closer to the collar where it's still comfortable to walk. Your dog will get used to it and will eventually just walk right by your side.

As the days go on, lengthen the leash an inch at a time the you'll watch your pup walk right next to you on a fully extended leash.

My puppy hated his leash at first and refused to even walk with it on..Put the leash by him as he sleeps for the first day or so. After that put the leash on him while he is in the house and let him drag it around the house (while watching him). He will eventually get used to having the leash on and around him. After that then you can take him outside with the leash on and he should tolerate it. After awhile he will get the hang of it and be fine.

It takes time for him to get used to the leash. I recommend leaving the leash on him in the house for small increments. Eventually he will not be so upset about the situation.

Every time you are able to get his leash on give him a few treats and eventually he will love walks again, but for now the treats will work nicely
