My two Cockatiels do that too. It's just their way of playing around. When your parakeet does that the next time check and see if the bird needs more food or water or maybe just to freshen the water. With my 4 yr. old Cockatiel he scream whistles and it's when he's out of food when he wants more. It's kind of cute. But alot of times it's just that they may also copy other sounds around the house like knocking on door. I used to tap my
hand on the table and both birds picked it up. They tap their beek on the cage or their dish or on the table when they are on it. When I open or close the zipper on my binder, The 4yr old bird makes that same zipper sound.

I just got an abandoned female cockatiel, she did this. (she lived with 2 keets in one cage) I put a regular dish of seed in and noticed right away that she hulls her seed in the dish. In doing so she used her beak to remove the hulls and get to fresher seed. Since then I have put an open dish of seed and she does fine, although I need to sift it for her. She is not trained at all in socialization, right now I am just try to get her to eat other foods besides seed, my other tiels eat pasta, veggies and lots of fruit. Takes patience, but well worth the wait. Good Luck, you have a friend for life.

i dont think that there is really anything that you can do.it may just be a nervous habit for the bird. if it is too annoying then you can always move him to another room to eat
