do tasers available for the general public work effectively? are they good for self defense?

i want an alternative to guns and knives for self defense, (e.g. weaponry).

They like certain types of pepper spray and other self defence weopons are ilegal in most American States and Canadian Provinces. But yes they are very effective but unfortunatly in the time it would take you to pull it out of your coat or bag well the attacker allready has you. And how can you carry an object the size of a hair clipper or larger in jeans or shorts...

I don't think they are legal in a lot of places.
I carry a stun gun in an open fanny pack...
I have never had to use it on a person,
but it does scare the dogs away while
I'm out running. Just the clicking sound
seems to do the trick.
A good self defense class would be a
better defense, for just about anyone.

No these models do not work well for defense at all, I shoot myself in the nuts all the time with mine its kinda neat...
