I workout six days a week and the most boring day is legs. I climb the stair master everyday for twenty mins at around 80 steps per minute. Would climbing be the same as training legs once per week, that is, will I get definition on my legs? or should I continue to climb the stairmaster and train legs once a week?

If you are bored with this, move onto something else. Try some form of kickboxing or other leg exercise. This is fun and is great for the legs. You don't need to go to a gym to do this. Put some tunes on in your home and have some fun.

Hi jd!

I think you're not clear on how to increase muscles and what types of fitness equipment do what. Fitness equipment can normally be divided into 2 groups; cardio equipment and strength training equipment. Cardio equipment includes such pieces as treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, rowers, stairclimbers, etc. Strenth training equipment includes multi-gyms, racks, cages, benches, dumbbells/barbells, etc. Cardio machines are made for endurance, burning fat, toning, shaping, and ultimately affect your entire body and have a large impact on your heart (which is why you should monitor your heart and train in your target heart rate zone for maximum fat burning). However, strength training equipment target and isolate specific body parts in the hope of increasing muscle mass.

So back to your question. If you want to increase the size and definition in your legs you need to be doing strength training exercises. Calf raises and leg curls will help your calf muscles. The thigh and butt muscles can be worked with exercises like a leg extension, leg press, squat, hip abduction/adduction, glute kickbacks, etc. An excellent multi-gym, such as the BodyCraft XPress Pro located at http://www.A2ZFit.com/bcxprspro.htm will greatly help with all these exercises. Check out our A2Z Fit site and let us know if you have any questions. Best regards and happy training!

Stairmaster will give you toned legs, but if you want ripped muscles you have to do weight training.

If you mean climbing actual rock, I would say definately. This is because you would work different muscle groups and get more definition in your legs.

20 minutes???? That is a warm-up. Try 3 times a week for 60 minutes each day.
