Pit bulls don't "go bad", nor do they have a locking jaw that another poster stated.

With any dog, you can have a dog that just isn't wired right because they were poorly bred from parents with unpredictable and/or undesireable temperments.

I urge you learn all you can about the breed and take your dog to training ASAP.

Please check out these sites! They have tons of information about the breed, your responsiblities as an owner and what is and is not normal behavior for pit bulls.

I had a pit bull that I had to put down last year, only because she was really sick. She was the sweetest thing. She never hurt anyone, and she was 13 when she died. Not all pit bulls go bad, but some dogs get Alzheimer's just like people do. Pit bulls are very strong dogs and if they develop the dementia, they can really hurt someone. But short of developing this they act however they are trained. If you take care of this pup and treat it with love, you can expect many years of happiness and companionship. When she grows older start watching for signs that she is not remembering who you are, that will be the time to possibly have her put down. That is many years from now, just enjoy her.

Ever heard of a Wive's tale? Pit bulls are members of the Terrier family and there are many many terrier breeds on earth. Unless Pits are just some kind of anomoly in the dogworld then all Terriers would suffer the same fate of "going bad".

Stereotyping Pits to "go bad" is no different then saying everyone from West VA is inbred.

I'm a firm believer in: Its the owner not the dog! They don't go bad at a certain point. I personally have never been around a mean pit bull. Unfortunately they get such a bad wrap by the media, many people won't consider adopting them and they get put to sleep in the shelters. I know of several rescues that won't rescue a dog even if it remotely looks like a pit. Have fun with your puppy!

Bad owner = bad dog. Just because he's a pit, doesn't mean he'll be a bad dog. I have known some really awesome and gentle pits. Do your research. Learn everything you can about the breed, and train him well. You may even want to invest some money in obedience school. Find a program that teaches you how to train and handle him, so you can continue the work after he finished the program. He'll be a great dog if you take good care of him.

Pit Bulls just have gotten a bad name. They are really sweet dogs but yes very strong. My son and his roommate have a 2 yr. old pit and it is really sweet. Take your dog to obedience school and show it alot of love. It will be a good dog if you are a good owner.

Pitbulls "go bad" the same way ANY other breed of dog would. If its sire or dam have a poor temperament, the puppy may inherit the poor temperament. If a dog is abused, it can become mean. If a dog isn't properly socialized, it may become fear-aggressive. Some people train their friendly dogs to be aggressive. One of the side effects from certain vaccines is aggression. And finally, some dog breeds are prone to be dog aggressive/animal aggressive and will try to get any other animal they see...this DOES NOT mean they are human aggressive. Pitbulls are known to be animal aggressive, but are extremely people friendly. One of the oldtime nicknames for pitbulls is "the nanny dog" because they were so good with children. So, if you pup does not like other dogs/cats/squirrels, etc when it grows up that is normal and you just need to make sure he is not allowed access to them. If he is aggressive towards humans...he needs a dirt nap.

Pit bulls don't "go bad", they actually are bred to have a very strong locking jaw. Any dog will bite, given reason to do so, but when a pit bites, it actually can't let go until the adrenalin rush is over. This is a big difficulty, for example, how can you relax and hold still if a pit has your arm in its mouth?
With training, pits are wonderful dogs. They are sweet, gentle, smart, protective, anything you would ever want in a dog. But you need to make sure it is never given a reason to bite, not a person, a dog, anything.

Owners go bad. Train the dog, get professional help if you need it. Let the dog know you are the boss. I'm a woman in a wheel chiar and my 90lb pit bull is a very good dog and dose everything I tell him to do.

I used to have a pitbull. He was a great dog. A good friend of mine has one and he's the sweetest dog you could ever meet.

I think pit bulls are a lot like guns...safe in the hands of responsible people.
