On the subject of bilingualism . . . it's funny. In my part of the country many job listing say "bilingual a plus," or "prefer bilingual."

The definition of bilingual is someone who speaks two languages but the ads never specify languages. However, if I went in and said I spoke English and Czech for instance, I doubt I'd get the job. Somehow bilingual= English and Spanish in the new speak, just like we seem to confuse Illegal Immigrant= Mexican, and then extrapolate toward racism, when there are illegals from all over, including "anglo" Europe.

Here is a straight lift off from Wikipedia:

Monoglottism (Greek monos, "alone, solitary", + glotta, "tongue, language") or, more commonly, monolingualism or unilingualism is the condition of being able to speak only a single language. Persons living in the United States, France and the United Kingdom are commonly stereotyped as monoglots. Persons whose native language is widespread, commonly used, culturally and economically influential, or otherwise useful, are likely to be monoglots.

Monolingual is also said of a text, dictionary, or conversation written or conducted in only one language.
