I'm putting on a wedding shower for my older sister. I don't want to serve the usual deli sandwiches. Do you have any suggestions or ideas on what I could serve along with any good recipes?

A fondue could be very appealing at a shower of such. You can purchase two or three fondues (depending on number of guests)-
or, you can rent them for the event.

You could serve Cheese fondue w/broccoli, lightly baked tine red potatoes, cauliflower, mushrooms and apples (apples are great w/cheese!)

You could have a Chocolate fondue w/strawberry's, banana's and marshmallows.

You could have a white sauce fondue (Alfredo) w/shrimp, mushrooms, baked chicken breast strips.

Fondues really work well w/these type of functions. They keep people mingling and sharing, while dipping.....

Be creative w/your choices -- Good luck & gongrats to sister!

Sunday Brunch

The Sunday Brunch Shower is definitely one of my favorites! Begin the shower at 11:00am. Serve fresh bagels and muffins, fruit salad and quiche. You can also serve a cold cut platter with rolls to make sandwiches.

For beverages, serve fresh orange juice and coffee. If you want to serve alcohol, you can make Bloody Mary's, Mimosas or a champagne punch.

For dessert, serve cake, lemon squares and chocolate covered strawberries.

Cookies as Place Cards & Favors
Sarah

I'm making cookies in the shape of a flower and a butterfly. I plan to decorate the cookies with icing and write each guest's name in icing on the cookie. These will serve as place cards and favors.

Creamy Chicken Bites
Rachael, Grand Rapids, MI

This is a family tradition, and is served at every wedding shower within our family. It's so easy!

Creamy Chicken Bites:

two c. cooked, and finely chopped chicken
one c. mayo or miracle whip
one c. shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 c. onions or any green chilies
salt & pepper to taste
one loaf mini(bite size)pumpernickel bread

Mix together all ingredients, and place one heaping spoonful on each slice of bread. Place finished bread slices on a cookie sheet and broil in oven for about five minutes - or until cheese is melted. Garnish with parsley.

Mini-Cheesecakes

We served tiny cheesecakes that we had purchase at the store along with a cake for our dessert, everyone liked the miniature portions.

Dessert Shower
Holly

I had a dessert shower. I decorated the whole table with lots of tulle and candles. I made all chocolate desserts and decorated them with fresh flowers. I served champagne and sparkling cider. And of course had lots of strawberries for color! It came out great, what woman doesn't like chocolate?

Light finger food - cheeses, crackers, fresh fruit, mini-quiches, blueberry cream puffs, crab dip and a bacon, egg and cheese casserole.

Salad Bar
Marie

I attended a bridal shower in which lunch was served with a Salad Bar. It was perfect for those watching their weight, (like the entire bridal party), while including an assortment of lean meats, cheeses, rolls & crackers. Two soups, vegetable & clam chowder, were offered in large crock pots.

Interspersed between and around the bowls of fruits & vegetables were whole pineapples, heads of cabbage, whole carrots in a vase, (with the greens left on), apples, oranges & bananas. The salad bar itself was a beautifully, colorful display. Some of the foods served included:

Lettuce
Spinach
Shredded cabbage
Shredded carrots
Pickled Beets
3 bean salad/corn
Alfalfa sprouts
Grapefruit & orange sections
Pineapple slices
Pear & apple wedges
Hard boiled eggs (halved)
Cubes of lean Turkey & Ham, and an assortment of cheeses.
Croutons & 3-4 different salad dressings.

For the last shower I did an assortment of finger foods.
veges with dill dip
cheese & sausage platter with crackers
fruit skewers with a fruit dip
spinach dip in a round bread loaf
Turkey club tortilla roll ups
Marinated olive kabobs
Your favorite non-alcoholic punch
And I ordered a decorated white cake from my favorite bakery (sorry I'm a sucker for white bakery cake with butter cream frosting.)

Here are some of the recipes
DILL DIP

1 C sour cream
1 C Hellmann's mayonnaise
1 T parsley flakes
1 T onion, chopped finely
1 t seasoned salt
1 T dill weed

Place all ingredients in a bowl. Stir until mixed. Allow to chill several hours, preferably overnight .

Fruit Dip
1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
1 cup sour cream
½ cup marshmallow crème
4 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
zest of 1 lemon
1 tablespoon lemon juice

Combine all ingredients and beat until smooth and creamy. Makes 2 to 3 cups.

SPINACH DIP
10 oz pkg frozen chopped spinach
1 small onion, chopped fine
1 can water chestnuts, chopped
1 C sour cream
1 C Hellmann's mayonnaise
1 pkg Lipton or Knorr's Vegetable soup mix
Round loaf of rye or pumpernickel bread

Thaw spinach and squeeze out as much water as possible. Mix in remaining ingredients. Cover and chill several hours or overnight. Hollow out loaf of bread, cut removed bread into cubes. Just before serving place spinach dip in bread and scaller reserved cubes around the loaf for dipping.

Turkey Club Tortilla Roll-Ups
½ cup Miracle Whip
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro or 2 teaspoons dried cilantro
4 slices bacon, crisply cooked, crumbled
6 flour tortillas, 7 or 8-inch
½ cup chopped tomato
½ pound cooked turkey, thinly sliced
6 leaves lettuce

In small bowl, combine Miracle Whip and cream cheese; mix until smooth. Stir in cilantro and bacon. Spread about 2 tablespoons cream cheese mixture on each tortilla. Top each with 1 rounded tablespoon tomato, 1 slice turkey and 1 lettuce leaf. Roll up each tortilla tightly. Cut each roll into 8 pieces; secure each piece with cocktail toothpick. Serve immediately or cover tightly and refrigerate until serving time. Makes 48 servings.

May substitute flavored tortillas and deli turkey. I used 10” vegetable herb (and didn’t need 6). I also placed Miracle Whip, cream cheese, cilantro and bacon in bowl of food processor fitted with metal blade and processed until smooth.

Marinated Olive Kabobs
Marinade
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
2 thin slices lemon -- quartered
2 cloves garlic -- quartered
Kabobs
6 ounce can pitted black olives -- drained
1 red bell pepper
4 ounces feta cheese

In food storage plastic container or plastic bag set in bowl, combine all marinade ingredients; mix well. Add olives; seal container or bag. Turn to coat olives well with marinade. Refrigerate 2 to 4 days, occasionally turning container or bag to coat with marinade. To serve, remove olives from marinade; discard marinade or save for a later use. Cut red bell pepper into 1/2-inch squares and feta cheese into 1/2-inch cubes. For each kabob, thread 1 olive and 1 bell pepper square onto toothpick. Gently spear 1 cheese cube into point of toothpick. (Do not plan to have these appetizers stand on cheese cube as feta cheese will crumble.)

Soup, salad and dessert, maybe. What does she like? Maybe a theme based on her preferences.
