I use Ubuntu Linux, and have noticed that the programs I find on SourceForge.net seem not to be available through the Ubuntu repositories. It would be very useful if they were, especially the more popular ones, so I wouldn't have to manually install them. Why aren't they? What makes them different from other open-source packages that are available through Synaptic (or apt-get)?

I installed the VLC media player and Amarok from the ubuntu repositories and these are from sourceforge.

Not all the sourceforge packages will be in the repositories because that simply does not make sense. They will keep adding stuff from sourceforge as they test the stuff in Ubuntu and "mark" the software stable or compatible for it.

Make sure you have the universe repositories in your sources.list

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

and add this line to it at the end:

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ edgy universe

Then save it and close.

and

sudo apt-get update

then try again.

Good luck

Sorry. in step with threat it is merely that i'm over fifty however the appliance i does no longer want to bypass to a wasteland island with out is wget. Y'comprehend, the command line fetch application? i became merely attempting to get my hands on that Blender info-of-concept action picture Elephant's dream and that i've got been given variations that have been ninety MB and 50 MB -- no count what I did on my browser i could no longer get an entire version and had no clue as to why Proog offed Emo. ultimately I copied the region of the document, typed wget and pasted the document region and got here across that Proog became as loopy as Emo stated he became (no longer that Emo became any saner). GCC is business potential compiling. Wget is business potential downloading. Inkscape is effective yet I ought to vote for wget.
