Many different chemicals are used in the production of semi conductors and the electronic equipment they are used in. There are also petrochemicals (oil based plastics, etc.) that are used. When the equipment heats up, it ''bakes'' the various pieces which causes them to give off tiny molecules of these chemicals. This evaporation continues throughout the life of the device, though as time passes, less molecules are released. That is why the odor never goes away. Put your nose close to an old TV and you'll still get that odor. It just doesn't fill the room like it did when the set was new!

There is a light oil that is in the plastics and the circuit boards of most electronic devices that has to get burned off when it is initially put into service. Whenever buying a new computer, TV, or other electronic device, its a good idea to let it run all night so that it can get a good "burn-in" and all of the internal components can be properly seated into place.

There are various chemicals used in electronics manufacturing. These include paints, plastics, cleaning agents, fluxes, etc. As you start using the gadgets, they heat up and outgas some of these agents. Most of these are expected, and do not cause any damage to the electronics.
