They cost money. Many have a lot of sugars added which will give you a rush, then a crash.

This depends on what you are trying to achieve. If your diet is generally lacking in protein (vegetarian?) this may help fill that gap. Protein shakes are not diet drinks...They contain calories, so unless you are a body builder or require another source of protein, stick to an additional chicken breast. Animal protein is better for you than say soy protein is.

It all depends on what you're trying to achieve by taking them. Generally, they're not harmful, but may not give you the results you're looking for. Like anything you take, too much of one thing isn't a good thing. Plus they usually contain sugars/carbs you don't need. It's better to get your protein from natural sources. Downsides of taking protein shakes:
They do cost money
They taste poorly (unless you buy pre-made mixes)
Downsides of taking proteins:
They need you to exercise in order to put on muscle
You need a healthy liver
You need a healthy kidney to process all those proteins
You would also need to drink a lot to process them
