I have one on my upper back. It was pretty uncomfortable getting it done, but it didn't really hurt until it got onto my shoulderblades. To me, the sensation was a bit like going to the dentist in that it feels like your bones are shaking. It was definately worth the pain though and the outcome of the tattoo is all that matters in the end.

I just got a tribal tat on my upper back 8 days ago. It is about 5 inch wide and 4 inch long. It is my 5th tat. I have my pelvic bone, lower back, toe, ankle and now the upper back all done. of all those this one hurt the worst. 8 days into it, the thing is still sore! Not to mention if it weren't for my husband I don't know how I would have taken care of it. Do you know how hard it is to reach that area. :)
Good luck.

It does hurt, but if you've never had a tattoo, after the outline it kinda goes numb, then the filling is pretty much just irritating, not extremely painful. I have one on my upper back however, and I will say when they go over the middle of your back on the skin over your spine: brace yourself, its a little more intense.

I have a tattoo on my lower back...it didn't hurt at all...I actually thought it felt good...and even if you do feel pain, it will only be for the first few minutes until your endorphins kick in and it goes numb. It all really depends on location and your personal pain tolerance.

Good Luck! Tattoos are awesome!

i just got another one last night, it hurt like hell, its my 10 visit to the tattoo shop, just my arms between my shoulder and elbows nothing else more is too much, and yes it will hurt, they use a gun with 18 needles and grind for up to 7 hours in the same place, i had some leftover pain medicine from the dentist, and thank god, you need to take something like that before you go, and it wont be so bad... happy tattooing

i have one on my lower back not even on my spine and it hurt like crazy the spine is worse. Make sure you eat before you go in and drink alot of caffine so your blood sugar doesnt drop from the reaction to the pain. Im not diabetic and it happened to me. :) Try not to tense up your back muscles either. I did and my back muscles were sore for a few weeks because of it. Its worth it though Im addicted. Good thing Im broke I guess:)

More than likely, I got a tatto on my belly area, the fatest part of my body, figure there were no bones to hit, boys was i wrong, it felt like a cat scratching you but you cant stop it, so put that pain on top of a less meatless part of your body and i am sure that you will get hurt, but itll look great i am sure.

it all depends on how you tolerate pain but in my opinion all tattoos hurt. needles in your skin just hurt in general. i have tattoos on my back and feet. feet hurt much more than the back and it is definitely bearable. i have had about 9 hours of tattoo done on my back this year so good luck with yours!
