I know I am probably overreacting, but my son is 18 months. He says basic words, up, down, please, and he understands most things you tell him. I guess I am wondering where he should be at with talking.

Don't fret, some kids just aren't chatty. He understands what you're saying. Keep reading to him and ask him questions about what he sees when you go on outings.

He's fine!

Boys are late developers when it comes to speech. If he's 18 months and he can say certain words, he's on the right track. Some boys dont start until they are 3. Keep him around other kids in school or at the park, he'll pick up quicker. And dont talk to him in baby talk. Speak to him normally so he can understand sentences.

I think he is good, my girlfriends little girl is the same age and says only basic words too. Its not really until two that they seem to have a large spurt and just begin to talk.

But wait it out all kids are different, just keep talking to him about everything, Explain everything you are doing. I do it, did it with my son and you will be surprised one day they will just start talking. My son is now two and he repeats everything I say and those basic things I talked to him about everyday, I find that he uses them when he is supposed to.

Your son is pretty average.
All kids are different and each child develops differently. My son is 2 and a half and can say 2 word sentences.
He is fine, dont worry!

my 18 month old is right at about the same level as yours. he is my 2nd child and seems to be right in sync with his older brother's development when he was this same age. we do use the baby sign language which really assists in communication, so he is able to show us things like "hurt" and "help" [which he cant say at all] i'm sure you needn't worry

Sounds like he is right on track. I would only be concerned if he wasn't attempting words at all, and not comprehending basic words.
