Well, let's put it this way.

Love and hate are not opposites.
Both foster strong emotions.

Love and apathy are opposites.

Apathy is destructive when you allow horrible things to happen. But apathy is constructive when a) it allows you to save your strength for particular battles, or b) it forces the people who really are responsible for the situation to step up to the plate and take care of it.

I cannot honestly think of a situation where apathy would be a good thing. In fact, I think that apathy can only be a bad thing.

Apathy is the absence of interest and action.

When people do nothing, governments raise taxes, murderers go uncaught and innocent civilians in Ethiopia die of starvation.
