I became very good friends with the male TA in one of my classes last semester. Since finishing the class we have gone out a few times. However, he has recently found out that he will be TA-ing a class that I am taking this coming semester. As of now, there will not be another TA working with him. He will be in charge of things like discussion sessions and paper grading. He said that the professor also grades papers and tests and he would just hand my work off to him, but I'm still in a bit of a quandary over this relationship.

I like him quite a bit and I really do not want to end things, but I don't want to cause any problems for him with the professor. I also do not want him to be accused of favoritism by my fellow classmates. I just don't know what to do.

Any opinions?

To the first poster: I'm 24 and he's 26.

Just to clarify for those not in college: A TA is a teaching assistant. They are graduate students who assist the professor. They do not write exams or give out final grades.

Have him talk to the professor about the situation. He should tell him that you both met before you knew about having the class and see what the professor thinks. As for the students, just don't make it known that you are going out (unless you go to a really small school, it might be hard to do). If the students don't know and you both don't act like you're going out, then they won't accuse of favoritism.

You can also just act like your not going out when you're in a classroom setting. Don't let the professor or the students know, just agree that he'll grade your work fairly and you can't get mad if you get a bad grade.

This is NOT an inappropriate relationship.

But like ALL relationships, they can be tricky. Take time to discuss this issue with him and his professor. It will be wise you take the inititive on this so the prof is not blindsided with it.

Good luck and enjoy each other's company

Thats a tough one... I personally would not care what any one thinks as long the relationship retains integrity! If it ever gets to the point where it is not pure as far as favoritism in grading, then I would care

There shouldn't be an issue if he can have professor grade your tests and papers. As long as he is okay with it and he doesn't feel it will affect his employment.

If you are adult enough to separate your personal life from your academic life, I don't see anything inappro[priate about it at all.
Thnk about it, how many other relationships are going on at the school that are far more taboo than a student & a teachers ***??

No more contact until the class is over. Sorry. It would be unprofessional for him to have a personal relationship with you. He knows this, and if he were an honorable person, he will maintain his professional boundaries and stop personal contact.
