Don't respond with food when your cat knocks things over. You have inadvertantly trained the cat to knock things. It has learned knocking things over brings food - you have to break that association.

Don't respond to your cat's bad behaviours by giving what he wants. If you do it reinforces to him that he's doing what he should to get fed. You need to break the pattern of 'knock stuff down, get food' or else he'll think that's the proper way to signal that he's hungry. Try putting some pennies in a can and shaking it when he knocks things over. Cats tend to be frightened of the sound and he will leave the area. Can you keep a bit of food in the bowl all the time? Some cats overeat when you do that but if yours doesn't then maybe it will help him stop "asking" for more.

Cats usually develop habits once they've learned that something works. So...feeding the cat everytime he knocks something over is probably teaching him that this is the behavior that you want him to engage in everytime he's hungry. I would suggest giving your cat a specific mealtime. Once he gets used to the routine he will no longer feel the need to knock things down, as he will not be hungry sporadically throughout the day. I wouldn't necessarily suggest getting a bowl that has food in it at all times, as the cat will eat more often and gain more weight (overweight=shorter lifespan). Good luck!

Keep a little dry food down for the cat all the time.

If your cat is jumping up to say your countertop to knock things over you could always try putting things up there to stop the cat from doing that in general. I've heard of putting double sided tap on your counters (most cats freak out when something sticky touches their paws) or something like orange peels (any citrus fruit peel seems to bother cats and they try to avoid it).

Good luck,

Cheers,
