look i cant give you the answer without a pretty long answer it started in the spring autumn periods when seven powerful states appeared at the same time. in order to defend themselves they all built walls on their boreders. in 221 BC the emperor qin absorbed the other six states and linked the walls. sine then the great wall of china has been rebuilt and extended through out china. it was built in order to defend troops throughout chinas history. back then there was always some fighting going on. im not sure if it was successful im still looking for that.

It wasrebuilt several times, ince it required immense amounts of money to fix. Only in times of great prosperity were the Chinese able to renovate i. It was majorly rebuil during the Sui dynasty and was connected during the Ming Dynasty. Between those eras, the wall frequently felll into disrepair.

for hundreds of years sections of it had been built by local rulers to hold back enemies
The first emperor of qin (the one with the terracotta army in his tomb) sometime around 3000 bc unified all of what is modern day china, give or take a little, and decided to connect all of these wall fragments into one giant wall. Over time, it fell into disrepair and rerepair based on each emperors choice.
