My laptop crashed a couple of months ago and I downloaded a program from C|Net. It tells me I have the files there still but I have to pay $69.99 to get them back. Is there any good free software online or any cheap stuff at Fry's or Staples or whatever? Please help. I will give best answer to one that works good.

I used the three recovery discs I got from GC, the maker of the laptop. I don't know what type of recovery it was, but I ran eData Unerase and it showed me I had many files left from before.

I'll tell you what this sounds like to me---there is some spyware/ or virus or keylogger, that can now infect your computer and
steal whatever they please off your HD. Whoever did the
stealing will contact you and give your vital files back FOR A
FEE. I hope you put good security ware on your laptop now.
Okay think this thru--if your laptop crashed, how did you
download anything from Cnet? What got it going after the
crash? If the files (whatever they are) are still in your laptop,
why would you need to pay $70. to open them up again.
Cnet is very reputable--I think it's someone using the Cnet
name. Does your laptop have SYSTEM RESTORE on it?
If so, run that to before the time it crashed.

I would suggest you go to Suggest A Fix.com (if your computer
is running ) or borrow one. Tell them the problem and they
will give you an answer. They're all pros over there.

Question is vague. Are you able to start up? You can hit the f10 to do a recovery. If you ever get back online, see the section on the PC HELP & TOOLS section to get a disc backup for future reference. You have two types of recovery, soft recovery will still leave your data files intact and then hard recovery will ERASE everything and return your computer to factory settings.
