I'm confused about what the surgery is he's getting on his tongue? Sounds like tongue tie to me - is he getting the frenulum snipped underneath the tongue? That usually causes trouble with breastfeeding so is identified early on if you have a knowledgeable lactation consultant or pediatrician. It's a very simple procedure done in the office if it's a newborn - but does require general anesthesia for an older child since they must hold their mouth open and remain still for the clipping, but it's still a very quick procedure. The scariest part of this surgery will be the general anesthesia as that's always worrisome with anyone, but especially a small child. The procedure itself and recovery will be very simple and virtually pain free though.

If he is getting another kind of procedure, please let me know and I'll try to find out more about it.

I had this done myself and had to do it on my daughter (infant at the time). There was little if any pain. The procedure was so fast that it took the nurses longer to take her from the hospital recovery room my wife was in to the procedure room and back than the actual "snip". I am not sure how to comfort a 2 yr old of something like this because of the surroundings other than just be there for him. I remember my mother giving me a stuffed elephant that I was able to take with me. I still have that ratty old elephant even today.

Good luck.

Oh wow, this sounds so painful for you both. Make sure the doctor and nurses explain everything, since they really know the procedure. Make sure you ask any questions that you have. Write them down first so you don't forget. Good luck to both of you.

if he is only2 there's so much you can tell him. Just explain in simple words and don't scare him. Afterwards when he comes to be there and comfort him and later when okay by the doc give lots of ice cream to help with the pain and swelling

I dont know about you but I dont recall much from age of 2 and guess that you will remember incident more than your 2 year old. Just follow docs recommendations
