ok.
so my dad just got this new cat door for my cats to go out of so we can put the litter box in the garage so it wont stink up the laundry room. well apparently, my cats are to retarded to figure out how to go through. we open it for them and they go through, but if they want out, they just stand there stupidly waiting for someone to let them out. any suggestions?

You need to train them to use the door. It works best to remove the flap part of the door and get them to walk freely through the opening by calling them from the other side or offering them treats. After they go through the opening several times put the flap on and repeat the same action--offering treats to get them to push through the flap. They will catch on eventually. Right now they just think that the proper way through is to wait for you to open the flap.

I suggest not letting your cats rome freely outside this is very dangerous and irresponsable if your worried about the stink buy some arm and hammer or theres a wonderful product called a Air Freshner you might wanna look into it if the door goes straight into the garage i still wouldnt do it one mistake of leaving the garage door open and you have a problem

I have no idea but I really laughed at the image of your cats standing patiently at the door waiting for you to be the servant they think you are. My cat does the same kinds of things to me and roommates have all teased me to no end about it. He demands that his litter box be cleaned. He demands that I vacuum the carpet. He howls until we check the answering machine if there's a message when we were out. Cats are a riot.

I had to gently push my cats through the cat door till they got used to the feel of the flap touching them as they went in and out.

Try putting a little can of tuna or some strong smelling food on the other side of the door and see if they go through it.

Okay, here we go... they aren't retarded. They just don't WANT to go out there. If your garage is enclosed and attached to the house, try taking the flap off for a while, then putting it back on when they have decided it necessary to go out there. They LIKE having you as a doorman.

Firstly don't call the poor baby retarded.... animals can get freaked out by new things.... my parents cats got freaked by the door too... u have to train it slowly by having something hold the door up for awhile then gradually have it down further and further until they get used to it.

Lol your cats are retarded.....
lmao....ok this might sound wierd, but you could like "show" them through, and pick 'em up and MAKE them go through...not violently, of course.
