My 6 month old kitten, has developed a swollen bottom lip. He's eating normally, going to the bathroom normally and playing normally. Just don't know what to do about it. My vet said to keep an eye on it for a few days, it's been 5 days, and it hasn't gotten any better or worse. I've been giving him antibiotics from the vet from his neutering/declawing surgery that he had about 3 weeks ago. (He developed an infection in his paws, but that has gone away.) I've also tried, based on my vets advice putting neosporin on it, but he just licks it off. Does anyone have any other ideas?

We use plastic bowls for his food. I will try the ceramic bowls, and see if that helps... Also, we have a fake Christmas Tree up, and he has been chewing at that, trying to eat the britsles... (We are taking the tree down tomorrow, anyway, so hopefully that will help to)

Hi. Mine had the same thing, but it was just a matter of figuring out what she was allergic to. OK, here's Maggie's list. 1) Christmas trees, the real variety. She now gets allergy shots while I have a tree up. I make sure to vaccuum the remaining needles afterwards, so there are no residual effects. 2) Cat litter with blue crystals. We now use Tidy Cat for multiple cats. 3) Catnip, if you can imagine! Anyway, Maggie and the other cats now gets dog toys, no threat of catnip. I know, depriving my other cats of catnip is mean, but what do you do when 1 cat is allergic?
Good luck -- just pay attention to what causes it, or what changed to bring it about.

I work at a Veterinary Hospital and De-clawing is cruel, unnecessary, and your vet should of strongly resisted it as an option. Since it's already been done, all you can do is either trust your vet, or get a second opinion. Either way something needs to be done because it's not normal. Your vet should have a post-surgery fallow up and try something new, or further try and diagnose whats causing this reaction. Or- get the 2nd opinion from an out-side perspective. You would be surprised what other people can see that another doctor might have overlooked. 3 weeks is a long time, usually you should see results in a week or two's time. 3 weeks is too long, if it was going to work it would have by now. And he should at least look deeper into the issue (maybe it's a reaction to something in the household, stress induced) or he should have tried another medication.

Hmm, hard to say. It may be an insect bite or similar, or she might have gotten acne (yes, sometimes cats get pimples - I think it's because they'll drool a little when they're happy, but I'm no expert) I'd suggest monitering it for a couple of days; if it stops hurting when you touch it, and goes away, that's well and good. If not, see about taking her to a vet - if nothing else, he'll be able to recommend something to put on it

It sounds like an allergic reaction. Does your pet use a plastic bowl? If so, replace it with ceramic and see if that helps. Plastic bowls are a common cause of allergic reactions in house pets(no one is quite sure why). If that doesn't help, try to figure out if there is anything new in the house that he's using (litter, food, toys, etc). It may just be a matter of narrowing down what he's reacting to.
Good luck.

My cat had the same thing. The vet took one look and said she was allergic to something. Stormy got a steroid shot, and we determined that the only new thing in the house was a different brand of cat litter. The vet said to go back to the old brand. I did, and now Stormy's fine.

I assume that if your vet is not worried about it, it should be fine. If you don't think that your vet is concerned enough, or perhaps that he is misdiagnosing the swollen lip, you should take him (the cat) to a different vet. It never hurts to get a second opinion.
