i'm thinking about getting a tattoo on the back of my neck. i have wanted a tattoo for soo long but i don't want to get in a place that everyone has already (lowerback....) i have a small design already picked out that i really like, and long hair so it can be covered when it needs to be. just want to know some opinions about that location..and i know it's going to hurt like hell..but how bad is it really (this is my 1st!)..and if anyone has any other ideas for small designs let me know!
thanks *

I have a tattoo on the back of my neck it actually a bit larger than most people get,but it didn't really hurt. My artist had a heavy hand so every now and then I'd feel a sting. Everyone is difference, depending on your tolerance. Good luck

Everyone deals with the pain of tattoos differently. But having just got a tattoo that starts at my neck and goes down my back (3 days ago, so it's pretty fresh) I have to say that it stung a bit. I believe that all tattoos hurt, but if it's something you want then you can deal with the pain. Unless you are a complete wimp, you'll probably find that it didn't hurt nearly as bad as you thought it would. :)

As far as designs, make sure it means something to you. Also try to make it something more orginial than picking out a piece of flash from the artist's wall. I'm happy with all of my tattoo designs, but the ones that mean the most are the tattoos that have a special meaning. In the end all that matters is that you're happy with your decision because after all, it is your body and you have to live with it.

I'd suggest not having your first tat done on the back of your neck. I have one on my hip and that hurt REALLY bad...and I've heard that the back of your neck hurts more than anything else. If you really just want to have a tattoo in a place that not many other people have it, maybe you should have it done on your back, but up higher by your ribs. Express yourself however you want, and don't let anyone tell you not to, but for the first one you might be better off doing it in a less painful spot.

All I'm going to say is that I have 13 and the last one was on the back of my neck. I have never in my life cryed over a tattoo, all I got was a star and it hurt so bad. If I was you I would have them do a dry run to see if you can handle it.

My husband has seven tattoos and says the one on the back of his neck hurt a hell of a lot more than any of the others. I love tattoos (I have two), but for your first, I'd recommend considering a different location...maybe your upper back or your stomach instead of the back of your neck? You can always get another one after you've seen (and felt) what it's like.

I now have 7 tatts, my first was done on the back of my neck. I had it redone about 2 months after because I wanted it dark. It has been about 9 yrs. and it still looks great because the sun dosent hit it and there is no fading. The skin is usually soft there and easily cared for. It didnt hurt, but it can depend on the artist. I would compare it to accupunture. It really wasent bad. What hurt the most was the position I had to sit in for 2 hrs. while it was being done! :)

My favorite space for a small design is the back of the rib cage. You can hide it everyday w/o worrying about having your hair up or down but you can show it off when you want to. Think middle back and then to the left or to the right what ever you prefer. Barely anyone has tattoos back there. I have cherries on the back of each of my legs. that's also a very unique & cute spot. It will hurt during the outline but the rest is a pice of cake!

Yeap your right back of you neck is really bad!!!For me it took three hours when he was doing it and i have many other tattoos to, but that was the worst. It kind of made my left leg to twist when he was yapping with the needle, i bet some kind of nerve reaction haahah! But if your sure you can take it go for it. But somewhere else it would be easier, but of course take a tattoo where you really really want it you will have to carry it rest of your life.

I have one on the back of my neck it didn't hurt at all, It only gave me goosebumps up and down my arms and legs, I have a nautical star it's ocean blue and green, some people may think it;s white trash but that's horse crap!!, but it depends how you carry your self and what you wear, *tip* Just dont get it huge or something cartoonish or tacky! I;m a classy cool chick and i get compliments on it constantly, it's only my second tatoo, and both my tatoos have a purpose, the one on my hip is a tribal angled downward on my pelvis and it was in dedication to my buddy that lost his life in IRAQ
