I just recieved a letter (more like an ad) from the airforce reserves giving me all the bells and whisles about reenlisting. Ever since I got out the army, I got locks. Now I know that I can't have them in the army, and if I would of reenlisted I'd have to cut them off ( my locks are shoulder length now, but my hair was pretty long to begin with anyway). I was just wondering if I join the air force would I have to cut them off. I looked up their uniform standards but it didn't really tell me anything...

I would ask an air force recruiter.
I know guys get 'em chopped off, but do not know about girls.

The allowable hair styles for women in the Air Force have become more liberal over the years. But I do not believe that shoulder-length dread locks would pass the uniform regulations.

Shoulder cut for BMT. Hairstyles shall not be outrageously multicolored or faddish, to include shaved portions of the scalp (other than the neckline), or have designs cut or braided into the hair. Hair coloring must look natural and complement the individual. Haircuts and styles shall present a balanced appearance. Lopsided and extremely asymmetrical styles are not authorized. Ponytails, pigtails, widely spaced individual hanging locks, and braids which protrude from the head, are not authorized. Multiple braids are authorized. Braided hairstyles shall be conservative and conform to the guidelines listed herein. When a hairstyle of multiple braids is worn, braids shall be of uniform dimension, small in diameter (approx. 1/4 inch), and tightly interwoven to present a neat, professional, well groomed appearance.

This is prolly a question for the recruiter or whomever is in charge about getting you reenlisted. I know for sure you gotta get a buzz cut in boot camp, but air-force, not too sure. Like I said, ask the officals in the air-force.

Who knows in this day and age.. The whole "politically correct" issue has gotten way out of hand. At any rate, regardless of what branch of military you're going to join, respect the dress code and get rid of them.. Wouldn't you be better off without them in the first place? Dreadlocks are a perfect target to grab hold of.

If you can't have them in the Army you definitely cannot have them in the Air force.

No way, you must be shaved clean first, and clean cut later. Dreadlocks do not fly with the military.

The only way to keep your locks in the military is in your memory, sorry.

As long as it's off the collar and above the ears, you are good to go.
