Saul became king in 1050 and David becomes king in 1010. No one reigned in between them. Read 2 Samuel It tells there. David took over after Saul died on the battlefield. Ish-bosheth was anointed, and the tribes were split after Saul died.

The last Judge - Samuel, annointed Saul from the tribe of Benjamin as King. Before Samuel died, however, he also annointed David from the tribe of Judah as King.
When Saul and his sons died fighting the Philistines, David seized the throne and established the Davidic line of kings.
