Sometimes when I move, such as stand up or stretch, there is a popping or cracking sound similar to when someone cracks their knuckles. It usually dosen't hurt and just happens spontaniously. What causes this exactly and is it a bad thing or can it lead to something bad?

nah it's nothing serious. Like some people have said that if you crack your knuckles- it could lead to arthitis and all- but nothing has proved it. Plus while i was in massage therapy schooling, a chiropractor was the director of the program and she said if anything it's helpful to you. It's stretching and relieveing pressure that builds up between joints and just allowing normal nutritients to get back inbetween them joints and muscles. Happens to me all the time when i stand with my lower spine.

There are pockets of air in your joints that sometimes will pop, much like a bubble, but can reassemble themselves afterward. These provide cushioning and allower for smoother movement of your joints. Despite people saying it can cause arthritis, there is no known connection between the "snap, crackle, pop" syndrome and health issues.

Cracking your knuckles is actually the popping of little oil like bubbles in your skin. Its essentially the same in your body, but watch out, too much cracking on purpose can lead to arthritus.... I know it feels so good though.

The cracking sound is air trapped in the joints. It's nothing too worry about.

That is air pockets in the joints. Not going to cause you any problems in the near future, but start taking glucosimine(sp) to build up the cartilage in your joints.

its normal I do it all the time and since I figured out where the popping sound comes from I do it on purpose to gross my friends out and haven't had it cause problems yet. and it won't lead to arthritis that is only a rumor

It can be a number of things.
a. in the finger joints...an air bubble ( don't know HOW it gets there, tho)
b. A tendon or ligament is popping---and over many years, that tendon will "shred" and need to be repaired.

Been there, done that....

its the fluid moving between your joints. i dont think its a bad thing, especially if you arent intentionally doing it all the time or anything. it leading to arthritus is just a rumor.
