It means that in order to watch HD programming, you will have to purchase (or rent if your provider offers it) either a tuner or a DVR/tuner. I had a similar issue with my TV. I recently purchased a DirecTV HD DVR and can tell you that it was very well worth it.

hd ready means there is no tuner.what they mean is no atsc or air tuner to pick up channels with an antenna. thats it. even with a tuner or hdtv built in , you still need a hd cable or satellite box to decode their signals to send to your tv. so there is not much difference on price between one with (hd ready or monitor) and one with ( hdtv built in) any more. so but one with a tuner and hook up some rabbit ears ( i suggest an amplified one) and get free hd. it looks awesome , unless an antenna wont pick up any stations.-
