Good diet is terribly healthy and can help your state of mind. When we get depressed we may either eat comfort foods or some of us really cut down on the intake. Neither are good for your mental health. Exercise is also mandatory, even people taking medication should have a regular form of exercise, releases endorphins allows us to work off stress and sleep better(another problem of the depressed). Herbs can be just as potent as drugs(many drugs are simply copies of herbal medicines) so you won't find me advocating those, I am just not learned enough. The pet is a good thing, another way to release those wonderful endorphins, I believe petting animals alone has the potential to reduce stress. Luck with the problem and remember there are times when we can't "pull ourselves up by our boot straps" if you battle long enough with no relief please don't hesitate to ask a professional for help. Be well.

Well they say one of the best things you can do when you are really really depressed is have a pet, or two. Cause then you have someone around that you take care of, and they love you always, and don't give you any backtalk. It sounds like your depression is based on stress, reading everything that has been happening to you. So Having that cute little doggie, is a good thing, cause he will give you moments when you are not feeling all stressed, and overwhelmed out. Which i think is a big part of depression. You really need to do some stress management, cause that would help a lot, if you can cut down how stressed you are feeling about everything that is going on in your life right now, then you may find that you are not feeling as depressed, or depressed at all. Stress is a biggy, it gets everyone, at one time or another in their lifes, not only does it depress you, but if you keep getting more stressed you will find that you get sick a lot more often, and just don't feel good. You could go see a therapist that does stress managerment, and work with them for a while. Let them know how you feel about taking medication for depression. Cause i really think they will tell you that you may not need it , that this can be worked though, just by talking it out. Please don't let it wait to long thought before going and seeing about working on your depression, and stress level, otherwise it just might need to be treated with medications for a while.....so i wish you the best of luck here. Remember that there are things that are not in your control, and so stressing over them is not going to solve them. I will pray that your daughter, gets her head together, and gets into a better relationship then the one you said she is in. And i am very sorry about your sister diagnoses. But very happy you got that cute little doggie. You take care now, and go see someone about working these things out without medication......Best of luck to you.
Happy Hoildays

Why would you want to take medication, even a natural remedy, when you know that your depression is caused by the situation? You're having a completely normal reaction to all the stress in your life.
Enjoy your dog (fellow dog lover here!) and other things in your life that make you happy. Do whatever you can to deal with the other aspects of your life that are stressful (care for your sister and enjoy all the moments you can with her. Try your best to influence your daughter to make positive choices, but realize that she is now an adult and you can't control her. Enjoy the good memories you have of your father).

Hi. Wow you have had a lot of loses going on recently. I am really sorry. I don't know about the natural remedies but the health
stores like wild oats or vitamin cottage, depending on where you live places comparable to that, can really give you some good info on natural remedies for depression. Hang in there and hug and play with your cute doggie . That will help alot.

The vitamin Omega 3. It's not included in most "complete" vitamin tablets, but it's necessary for the creation of the "happy chemicals" of your body. It's literally impossible to feel happy if your system doesn't have enough Omega 3. (As far as foods go, it's most highly concentrated in fish oils, although it's present in a few other things, the amount in them is significantly less.) If you take it in the gel tablet form, usually you should take about 3 a day.
(As an extra note, Omega 3 has also been shown to increase intelligence.)

Talk to someone, anyone you trust, just talk about it to someone, it really does help, don't leave feelings bottle up inside, that will only make it worse, eat the right foods and get outside and walk, even if it is cold, take your doggie out for awhile, fresh air is a natural cure all!! As for your daughter, you already raised her, she has to live and learn on her own now, you can only be there to guide her if she will let you.

St John's Wort or Hypericum, get out with your dog and have a brisk 1/2 walk each day and drink plenty of water. Your daughter is at an age where she will have to learn for herself all you can do is wait and be ready when she comes home. Best wishes :-)

there is nothing wrong with taking antidepressants. there is a whole range of them to suit your own needs. they are not all prozac and tranquilizers. go to your doctor and have a chat. some excersise and counceling is all you might need to get you through.
st johns wort is supposed to be ok if you dont want to go to the dr, i used it and i didnt find it to be brilliant.
also try changing your diet
good luck
and remember, depression isnt somthing to be ashamed of, you wouldnt be ashamed of taking drugs for epilepsy or diabetes, so dont be for depression

I'm so sorry for you...hope things get better soon.
Try meditation (works wonders, especially if done every day, spine straight, for at least 5 minutes. Just clear your mind and sit...), also tai chi, yoga, and a little pampering of yourself here and there.
