Both, they were one and the same until some 'protesting' Christians split off in the 1500s to become Protestant Christians.
The Church started on Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles.

The Church has referred to itself as the “Catholic Church” at least since 107 AD, when the term appears in the Letter of St. Ignatius of Antioch to the Smyrnaeans:
"Wherever the bishop appear, there let the multitude be; even as wherever Christ Jesus is, there is the Catholic Church."

All of this was long before the Council of Nicea and the Nicene Creed from 325 A.D. which states, "We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church."

Catholics broke away from the rest of Christianity about 400 AD.By trying to be the dominant church ,they broke the rules on "Lording it over.." that St. Paul talked about. All the churches were to be equal, with a leading Bishop. In charge of themselves but Rome would not have it.So they made up the idea that Peter was the first Pope and then Papal sucession.Of course Peter was a married man.Paul said all the Bishops ,Deacons and Elders should be married"the husband of one wife"...but again Rome would not have it.They turned it into a "Boys club"(if you get my drift). The Catholic church is a far cry from the churches Paul set up in the first century.

The term 'catholic' originally meant universal. The term has been usurped by the church based in Rome, calling itself the "catholic" church.
Just as 'orthodox' means 'Adhering to the accepted or traditional and established faith' the term has been adopted by the Eastern branch of Christianity to describe their branch -- and suggesting that other Christians are automatically non-orthodox.
