My parents have brought my cat of 18 years for Christmas. We suspect that he may have arthritis. Is it safe to give him baby aspirin or ibuprofen to relieve any pain?

Aspirin is in fact administered to cats for arthritis by vets. The dosage is:

10 mg/kg, orally, every 48 hours

Ibuprofen dosage (NOT for arthritis):

5 mg/kg, orally, once a day

Tylenol -- will kill your cat! (but dogs can have it)

Ummmmmmmmm, aspirin is only toxic in high doses, 30mg per pound, just do a quick search on google for "dog aspirin". Buffered Aspirin in proper doses is proper treatment for arthritis. So yeah, a normal full adult asprin will be toxic for a 10lb dog but in your doses it will not kill your dog like other posters stated and will most likely help. I always heard the real toxic thing is Tylenol/Ibuprofen and should not be given as a substitute. You should go to the vet anyways, they have access to better treatments, anti-inflammatories current doses and they go to school for a reason. Find a vet that you can trust, I was able to develop a relationship with my current vet where she recommends OTC/ home remedies whereever she can and it is in the best interest for my dogs. She also regularly donates supplies for my rescues and doesn't charge for rescue office visits, not all vet are about the almighty $$. :)

No it is not.
"Aspirin has a long half life in cats, at least 24 to 48 hours, so it will reach toxic levels pretty quickly if it is given more frequently than once every 48 hours and the dosage is 10mg/lb so a baby aspirin (81mg) is a much more appropriate dosage for a cat than an adult aspirin. I have not seen much information on ibuprofen and cats but it is a good idea to avoid all non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications in cats, at least until one of them does prove to be safe in someone's clinical trials." (source:http://www.k911.biz/Petsafety/AspirinTylenolIbuprophenDangers.htm)

"Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Ibuprofen toxicity is due to an active metabolite made by the liver from the drug. This metabolite causes severe damage to liver cells and red blood cells. Dogs tend to have more liver damage, whereas cat's red blood cells undergo a transformation of their normal oxygen carrying hemoglobin to a non functional form called methemoglobin. One Children's Tylenol tablet contains almost twice the toxic level for a normal sized cat per kilogram of body weight, and the adult size Tylenol has more than six times the toxic level!"

You must not give the cat any human meds for arthritis pain. The vet needs to prescibe the dosage if he feels it will help. It is a very low dose, like 1/4 baby aspirin every third day. And that won't really do much for the cat. Any higher dosage will destroy the cat's liver in short order.

I was working with a homeopathic vet with my old cat and she was given some doses of Rhus toxicodendron at the 6C dosage. I think it did help her mobility a great deal.

Never give your cat aspirin or ibuprofen as neither are safe. Check out this site or goggle under cat arthritis. Good luck

Imagine for a moment your arthritis completely vanishing right now.

If, in a moment, your pain and stiffness melted away. And your joints all of a sudden functioned like a well-oiled machine.

Like a magic wand was waived, you'd be able to jump up from your chair and run around the room like a kid.

And imagine that you'd never have to suffer as much as a pinch of arthritis stiffness or pain ever again.

I know this sounds impossible right now, but bear with me, because sometimes miracles happen.

It was a gift from a woman on the other side of the world. From the kindness of her heart, she took pity on my suffering and taught me how to completely reverse my arthritis.

Today, I want to do the same for you!

My cat was diagnosed with congestive heart failure a few years ago and the Dr prescribed baby aspirin to help with blood clots. You only give him one every other day. This helped my kitty and he's much healthier now. You might want to consult your vet before giving you cat anything. Hope this helps

my cat recommended a baby asprin every three days for my 11 yr old. It helped with his pain but he died this morning, no notice, no warning. I'm devastated and blame myself thinking he was too young for this and maybe the asprin killed him, even though it was prescribed by the vet. I'll never know, proceed with caution if you use it and go with half of 81 mg instead of whole if you see a benefit. My cat had terrible arthritis so I proceeded with doctors prescription. I'm devastated.
